Don’t get me wrong, I have a big soft spot for Greenpeace. but is it just me or have they (and other environmental activists for that matter) rather done this to death? Is this visually compelling any more? I am sure that once upon a time hanging a sign from somewhere high-up was rather innovative and caught the media’s eye. A good photo op and all that. But surely now those days are gone? Can we have something more creative please guys, or would that be putting your professional abseilers out of a job? If you are going to climb up something to highlight climate change then make sure it is something that contributes to it, and that climbing it ensures it shuts down for a while (like a plane, powerstation etc.). Or do a huge piece of aerial art to inspire people. I know this would mean the abseilers don’t get to be all macho, but it would involve lots of people who would then feel inspired to take further action – you know, the theory that you ask someone to do something small for you (e.g. like stand with hundreds of others in the shape of a dolphin) and they are more likely to do something more committed later. Like hang from a bridge…
