Measuring growth from outer space

These guys at Brown University are using satellite photos measuring the amount of light omitted by countries as a measure of developed (as a proxy to GDP). The growth of the South Korean economy can be clearly seen in these two images (and the sorry state of their brothers & sisters up north).
